computer use and eye health

The English mechanical engineer, Charles Babbage who is known as the father of the computer because he originated the concept of a programmable computer would never have dreamed the world would welcome his invention so willingly. With the usage of internet and computers the world has become a much smaller place. This has connected people from all over the world. It also has facilitated people with so much that there’s hardly any technical need left to be granted. The computer has become one’s life. It now controls life on earth more than being controlled

Millions of people all over the world sit in front of this computer for million reasons.  Some do so to relax and have some fun, some to get in contact with family and friends, some for educational purposes and some for work, and the others too for other random reasons. So in short the most famous and most used devise has become the computer which is popular among both young and old.

With the increase of the usage of the computer somehow although there may be a lot of positive points there is also a negative side which begins with eye health.  Staring at a lighted up screen for hours may result in a negative way. It causes eye strain problems which fall under the heading computer vision syndrome (CVS). Between 50% and 90% of people who use the computer  have at least some symptoms.

One reason to vision problems in using computer screens is that your eyes happen to follow the same path over and over again, which causes damage and gets worse with time. While working with computers you need to get your eyes to focus and refocus all the time. Your eyes react to images and movements you see as they carry them to your brain so that it could be processed. And this whole process needs a lot of muscle strain of your eyes. So at this poin t if you already have an eye problem you would find yourself in a worse condition.

Somehow even though there is no proof that computers cause any long- term damage to your eyes the regular usage could lead you to eye strain and discomfort as well. If you do not take this discomfort seriously it would slowly affect your eyes more and more. It would cause you to make mistakes at work place and also result with frequent headaches.
So before facing all these problems it is wise that you make things better. The saying “prevention is better than cure” stands true in this case too. By changing the lightning around you, you could cut the glare and reduce the effect on your computer screen. You could also use a glare filter to your monitor so that it controls the glare.

Setting your monitor slightly below eye level about 20to 28 inches away from your face too may help in the eye strain as it is the best position for using the computer.  Give your eyes a break by looking at something that is around 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This would relax your eyes and reduce the discomfort you feel by using the computer for long hours. However if you are a person working with the computer daily for long hours , its best you get your eyes checked by a doctor to make sure you don’t damage your vision.
